about

Midnight Mass Graves is a song about the unmarked graves of indigenous children that have been found at residential schools across Canada. The song is produced by Bohemian-Métis musician and producer Janet Panic and cover art for the single (and album soon to be released) is by renowned Métis visual artist Christi Belcourt.

lyrics

Midnight mass graves, brutal execution
Not Afghanistan or Kosovo or the Nazi solution
Oh Canada, at thy church’s door
Where they remained buried for a century or more

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
No buffalo to warn us, no pony to ride

No place for their tears to fall
Except on that rocky ground
Others killed without a sound
I wept when I heard who they found
She wipes sleep from her eyes
My grandchild bold, safe and wise
She always questions why
Infinite Invisible ties

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
No buffalo to warn us, no pony to ride

Barefoot in October’s frost
Witness Nikawi’s mournful loss
Baby blue, sign of the cross
Independent Inquiry launched

Midnight mass graves, brutal execution
Not Afghanistan or Kosovo or the Nazi solution
Oh Canada, at thy church’s door
Where they remained buried for a century or more
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
No buffalo to warn us, no pony to ride
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
No Kokum to hold us, no Nikawi by our side.

* Cree translation; Nikawi = Mother & Kokum = Grandmother *
